Can you call an email address?

No. An email address has no phone number behind it, so there is nothing to dial. A phone cannot ring an address, and no mail app can dial one as if it were a number. People who type this question usually mean one of three things, and two of the three are possible. This page takes them in turn.

What people mean by "call an email"

1. Call the person whose email address I have. Not possible from the address alone. An email address does not resolve to a phone number; there is no lookup that turns one into the other the way a domain name turns into a server. If you only have someone's email, ask them for a number or look for one in their signature.

2. Get a phone call when an email arrives. Possible. This is what an email to phone call service does: the email is sent to a special address, and a phone rings and reads the message out loud. It is how a monitoring tool that can only send email ends up waking an on-call engineer at 3 a.m.

3. Send a text or a call to a phone number from an email. Partly. Email to text worked through carrier gateways such as number@vtext.com, and those are closing; details below. Email to call is possible by route 2, to numbers you control.

How to make an email call your phone

Send the email to an Email2Phone address and the phone rings. Three steps:

1. Create an account and add a phone number. You get an address in the form yourname@email2phone.net. The number you add can be a mobile, a landline or a desk phone; there is no app to install.
2. Point the sending system at that address. Forward the messages you care about with a rule in Gmail or Microsoft 365, or enter the address as the notification recipient in the tool that sends the alerts: Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG, UptimeRobot, a Synology NAS, a UPS card or a temperature sensor gateway.
3. Answer the call. A voice reads the subject and the body. Press 8 to save the message, 7 to delete it or 5 to record a spoken reply. A message counts as delivered when someone presses a key, or when voicemail takes it, so switch voicemail off on that phone. With voicemail off, Email2Phone calls back at 5, 15, 30, 60 and again at 60 minutes until somebody presses one.

Filters decide which emails deserve a call, and whose phone. One condition each, on From, To, CC, Subject or Body: Subject contains CRITICAL can ring the mobile, Subject contains RECOVERY can ring nobody, and anything no filter catches rings the default number. One thing worth knowing before you set it up. Email2Phone is a mailbox, not a dialer. If 80 alert emails arrive at once, you get one phone call that says how many messages are waiting, not 80 calls.

Can you call an email from your phone?

No, but you can dial in and hear your emails. Email2Phone has access numbers in the US, Canada and the UK; call one, enter your PIN, and it tells you how many new and saved messages you have and reads them out. Dialing in is free on every plan. That is the closest thing to "calling an email" that exists: the call goes to the mailbox that holds the messages, not to an address.

Can an email call a phone number that is not mine?

Only numbers on the Email2Phone account, which means numbers you control or have permission to add. You can add several, so one email can ring a colleague's phone as well as yours, dialed one after another or all at once. It is not a way to place a call to a stranger from their email address; the numbers have to be configured on the account first, and each filter chooses which of them to ring.

Can you send a text to a phone from an email?

Only through a carrier email-to-text gateway, and those are shutting down. AT&T shut its gateway down on 17 June 2025, Verizon closes vtext.com by 31 March 2027, and T-Mobile has published nothing, although administrators report its gateway stopped delivering in late 2024. Email2Phone does not send text messages at all. It places voice calls only, which is the reason it works on a landline and does not depend on any carrier's gateway staying open.

Can you answer an email by phone?

Yes. While the message is playing, press 5, speak after the tone and press #. The recording is stored on the Email2Phone system, and the original sender receives an email with a link to play it. For a reply like "on it, twenty minutes" that is faster than finding a laptop, and it works from a phone with no data connection.
