Verizon Email to Text Is Shutting Down. Here Is What Breaks on 31 March 2027 and What to Use Instead

Verizon is shutting down its email to text gateway. Its support notice says the shutdown will be complete by 31 March 2027, and that some senders will lose access before then. After that, nothing sent to a number at @vtext.com or @vzwpix.com will arrive.

If a monitoring tool, alarm panel or NAS in your environment texts you through one of those addresses, it is going to stop. And the failure is silent. The device gets no error, and any bounce typically goes to a sender address nobody reads.

This page covers what is ending and when, what it breaks, your options for replacing it, and why a phone call is the safer channel for the few alerts that have to wake someone up.

Which Carrier Gateways Are Shutting Down, and When?

Verizon has published an end date for its email to text gateway. AT&T has already shut its gateway down, and T-Mobile's is reported to have stopped working without any announcement. Verizon's is the last one still running.

Read Verizon's wording carefully. The notice says the company "anticipate[s] this process will be completed by 03/31/2027, although some senders may lose access to legacy email-to-text prior to that date." So 31 March is the end of the shutdown, not the start of it. Your gateway could go quiet next month. Verizon also warns that messages may already be failing because of SMS spam filtering, or because the recipient turned email to text off on their own line.

AT&T's shutdown is finished. Its support page states that on 17 June 2025 the email to text and text to email service was shut down, in both directions.

T-Mobile is the odd one out. It has never published a shutdown notice, and its support pages still describe @tmomail.net as a working delivery path. Administrators have reported since late 2024 that messages sent there no longer arrive, but T-Mobile has not confirmed that, and no T-Mobile date exists to cite. Plan as if the gateway is gone, and test it if you depend on it.

Why Are the Carriers Ending Email to Text?

Spam. The gateways accepted mail from any sender, with no account, no authentication and no charge, and delivered it straight to a subscriber's text inbox. That made them a cheap route for abuse, and the carriers filtered them harder every year. Neither Verizon nor AT&T published a detailed explanation. Verizon's notice does point commercial customers to its paid Enterprise Messaging service, EMAG, an authenticated and billed channel.

What Stops Working When vtext.com Goes Dark?

Anything that emails a phone number. In most environments that is a longer list than anyone remembers:

• Monitoring tools. A Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG or UptimeRobot contact whose address is 5551234567@vtext.com.
• Alarm panels and building systems. Fire, intrusion and HVAC controllers that email on a fault.
• NAS and backup jobs. A Synology or QNAP box that texts when a disk fails.
• UPS units. Network cards that email when the room goes to battery.
• Temperature and environment sensors. Server rooms, labs and cold storage, using a sensor gateway that sends email.
• Scripts and cron jobs. A mail command at the end of a backup script, written in 2016 and never looked at again.

Most of these were set up years ago and nobody has looked at them since. When the gateway closes, the alert you were counting on simply stops, and nothing tells you.

How Can You Get Alerts on a Phone Without a Carrier Gateway?

You have four broad options. None is a free carrier gateway, and each trades something away. The table is meant to be fair enough that you can pick against your own environment rather than ours.

Why a Phone Call for the Alerts That Matter?

Most alerts can wait for an inbox. A handful cannot, like the primary host going down or the freezer reading 12 °C. For those, a call beats a text on the points that matter at 3 a.m.

• It can ring through Do Not Disturb. On iPhone and Android, the recipient can allow calls from favourites or specific contacts while Do Not Disturb is on. That is a handset setting the person configures, and Email2Phone cannot guarantee it. A ringing phone is also harder to sleep through than a notification.
• It works on any phone. A landline at the plant, a desk phone, a flip phone in a night-shift pocket. Nothing to install, nothing to keep updated.
• Nothing to register and nothing a carrier can retire. No 10DLC paperwork, and no free gateway that disappears with a support notice.
• The subject and body are read aloud. Not 160 truncated characters. And you can dial in for free from the US, Canada or the UK to hear the message again.
• Delivery is confirmed by a key press. With Email2Phone, the listener presses 8 to save, 7 to delete or 5 to reply. If nobody presses a key, it calls back at 5, 15, 30, 60 and again 60 minutes later.
• A burst is one call. Eighty alert emails arriving at once produce one call that announces how many messages are waiting, not eighty calls.

What to Do Before 31 March 2027

Five steps, in order. The first one takes the longest.

1. Step 1: Find every sender. Search your mail server logs for vtext.com and vzwpix.com: a Postfix or Exim log, an Exchange message trace, the outbound log on your SMTP relay. Then check the places that send without going through your mail server: Nagios contact definitions, Zabbix media types and user media, PRTG notification contacts, the notification panels on each NAS, UPS card, sensor gateway and alarm panel. Search for txt.att.net, mms.att.net and tmomail.net at the same time, since anything still pointed at those is already broken.
2. Step 2: Sort them. Which alerts have to wake a person? Host down, temperature excursion, UPS on battery. Which can wait for the morning inbox? Most can.
3. Step 3: Move the wake-up alerts first. Put them on a channel that does not depend on a carrier gateway, and test each one from the device itself, not from your own mailbox.
4. Step 4: Route the rest to email or a push app. Do not pay per call for things that do not need a call. Write down what you changed this time.
5. Step 5: Do not wait for March. Verizon says some senders lose access before the date. If your alerts stop early, you will not be told.

The Bottom Line

Verizon's @vtext.com gateway ends by 31 March 2027, possibly earlier for your sender. AT&T's is already gone; we cover what to use now that AT&T email to text has shut down separately. T-Mobile's has no notice and no date, and by all reports it stopped delivering in late 2024. Inventory the senders now, and move the few alerts that must reach a human to a channel a carrier cannot switch off. A phone call that reads the message aloud and calls back if nobody presses a key is the one option on the table that does not depend on a smartphone, an app or a gateway.
